Hand Wipes for Kids: When and Where They Come in Handy
Kids find messes everywhere, from playgrounds and sports fields to school lunches and road trips. A sink isn't always nearby when they need to clean their hands.
Keeping hand wipes in a backpack, lunch bag, car or activity bag gives kids and parents a convenient option for everyday cleanups away from a sink.
Hand wipes aren't a replacement for washing with soap and running water. They're useful when a sink isn't immediately available.
When are hand wipes useful for kids?
Hand wipes can be useful when kids are eating, playing, traveling or getting messy.
Common situations include:
- Before snacks
- Before meals
- After eating
- After playground time
- After sports
- After arts and crafts
- During road trips
- While traveling
- At restaurants
- During outdoor activities
- After messy activities
- When a sink isn't nearby
The easiest approach is to keep a pack nearby for the situations when kids need a quick hand cleanup.
Hand wipes for school
School days can involve snacks, lunches, art projects, recess and plenty of hands-on activities.
A small pack of hand wipes can be useful in a backpack or lunch bag for:
- Before eating lunch
- Before having a snack
- After eating
- After recess
- After arts and crafts
- After outdoor activities
- Cleaning up small messes
For school, choose a compact format that doesn't take up much room.
Best format for school
Travel packs or individually wrapped wipes
Individually wrapped Wet Ones® Singles can be convenient for lunch bags, backpacks and other situations where you only want to carry a few wipes.
Always follow the school's rules regarding what children can bring or use during the school day.
Hand wipes for kids' lunches
Lunch is one of the easiest places to keep hand wipes.
Kids can use a wipe before eating or after a messy meal without leaving their lunch area to find a sink.
Keep a small pack of wipes:
- Inside a lunch bag
- In a backpack
- With a lunchbox
- In a school activity bag
Individually wrapped wipes are especially convenient because they can be packed alongside a lunch without taking up much space.
A simple lunch setup
Pack:
- Lunch
- Snack
- Water bottle
- Napkin
- Hand wipe
This gives kids a simple cleanup option before or after they eat.
Hand wipes for playgrounds
Playgrounds are another situation where hand wipes can be useful.
Kids may go from playing to having a snack and back to playing without a sink nearby.
Keep a travel pack in a purse, backpack or activity bag for quick cleanups after playing. A wipe can also help with sticky fingers, food messes and other everyday situations.
When soap and running water are available, washing hands remains the preferred option.
Hand wipes for sports and activities
Sports can take kids from one activity to another quickly.
Keep wipes in a sports bag for:
- Before snacks
- After practice
- After games
- Between activities
- Outdoor sports
- Team events
- Tournament days
A travel pack can stay in the same bag throughout the season, so you don't have to remember to bring one each time.
Sports bag setup
Consider keeping:
- Hand wipes
- Water bottle
- Snacks
- Extra clothes
- Sunscreen
- Other activity essentials
Use each product according to its label and intended purpose.
Hand wipes for road trips with kids
Road trips are a practical time to keep hand wipes within reach. Between snacks, rest stops, gas stations and roadside activities, there are plenty of opportunities for a quick cleanup.
Keep wipes somewhere passengers can easily reach them, such as:
- Center console
- Seat-back organizer
- Backpack
- Travel organizer
Use them for:
- Snack time
- Drive-through meals
- Rest stops
- Sticky hands
- Small spills
- Outdoor stops
For longer trips, keep a larger backup supply with the luggage.
Hand wipes for family travel
Traveling with kids means dealing with new places, unfamiliar schedules and fewer opportunities to wash hands exactly when you want to.
A small pack of wipes can fit into:
- Carry-ons
- Backpacks
- Purses
- Stroller bags
- Diaper bags
- Day bags
- Activity bags
They're useful during flights, road trips, sightseeing and restaurant stops.
For air travel, check current TSA requirements before your trip.
Hand wipes at restaurants
Restaurants can be a convenient place to use hand wipes, particularly when you're eating with young children.
Keep a small pack in your purse or diaper bag for situations such as:
- Before a meal
- Before snacks
- After eating
- Sticky fingers
- Small food messes
- When the restroom isn't immediately convenient
A wipe can be useful between activities when you don't want to leave the table.
If a restroom with soap and running water is available, washing hands remains the preferred way to clean them.
Hand wipes after outdoor activities
Outdoor activities can leave kids' hands covered in dirt, grass, sand and other everyday messes.
Keep wipes nearby after:
- Playing in the yard
- Visiting a park
- Hiking
- Camping
- Going to the beach
- Gardening
- Playing sports
- Riding bikes
A travel pack in an activity bag or car can make cleanup easier before getting back in the car or sitting down for a snack.
Hand wipes for arts and crafts
Arts and crafts can get messy. Keep wipes nearby for activities involving:
- Paint
- Markers
- Glue
- Clay
- Glitter
- Crayons
- Other craft materials
A wipe can help with a quick hand cleanup when kids finish a project or need to move on to another activity.
Hand wipes are intended for cleaning hands. Use a product specifically designed for cleaning craft surfaces.
Hand wipes before snacks and meals
Before snacks and meals is one of the most practical times to keep hand wipes nearby.
Kids may have been:
- Playing
- Touching toys
- Outside
- At school
- In the car
- At a playground
- Doing crafts
A quick hand cleanup can be convenient when there isn't a sink nearby.
When soap and running water are available, washing hands is the preferred option.
Are antibacterial hand wipes useful for kids?
Some hand wipes contain an antibacterial active ingredient, while others are designed for cleaning and refreshing.
Wet Ones® Antibacterial Hand Wipes contain benzalkonium chloride as their active ingredient.
Wet Ones® Sensitive Skin Hand & Face Wipes do not contain an antibacterial active ingredient and are designed for gentle cleaning and refreshing.
Choose the product based on what you need and follow the product label.
Don't assume every Wet Ones® wipe is antibacterial
Wet Ones® makes several different wipe formulas.
Always check the individual product packaging for current ingredients, directions and intended use.
What type of hand wipes are best for kids?
The best format depends on where you'll use the wipes.
For school and lunch bags
Individually wrapped wipes or travel packs
They're compact and easy to pack alongside a lunch or inside a backpack.
For sports
Travel packs
A travel pack can stay in the sports bag and be used throughout the season.
For road trips
Larger packs or canisters
You have more storage space in the car, so a larger supply can be convenient.
For family outings
Travel packs
A small pack can fit easily into a purse, backpack or activity bag.
For quick, individual cleanups
Singles
Individually wrapped wipes are convenient when you only need to carry a few.
Where should parents keep hand wipes for kids?
Think about the places where your kids spend the most time.
Good locations include:
- Backpack
- Lunch bag
- Sports bag
- Activity bag
- Car
- Purse
- Diaper bag
- Stroller
- Home entryway
- Kitchen
- Craft area
You don't need wipes everywhere. Keep them in the bags and locations you use most often.
How should kids use hand wipes?
Follow the directions on the individual product label.
In general:
- Remove a wipe from the package.
- Thoroughly wipe the hands.
- Cover the palms, backs of the hands and between the fingers.
- Dispose of the used wipe.
- Close the package or container.
Younger children may need help or supervision when using wipes.
Don't allow children to treat wipes as toys, and keep packages out of reach of young children when appropriate.
Can kids use hand wipes instead of washing their hands?
Hand wipes are a convenient option when a sink isn't available, but they aren't a replacement for handwashing.
The CDC recommends washing hands with soap and clean, running water when available. When soap and water aren't readily available, CDC recommends an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
Hand wipes can also be useful for physically wiping hands and cleaning up everyday messes when you're away from a sink.
If kids' hands are visibly dirty or greasy, washing with soap and water is preferred when available.
Can kids use hand wipes before eating?
Yes, if the product is labeled for use on hands and is used according to its directions.
Keeping wipes in a lunch bag, backpack or activity bag makes them easy to access before snacks or meals.
For younger children, parents or caregivers may need to help with application and disposal.
Can kids use hand wipes after playing outside?
Yes. Hand wipes can be convenient after outdoor activities such as playground trips, sports, hiking and playing in the yard.
They're particularly useful when a sink isn't nearby.
If soap and running water are available, washing hands remains the preferred way to clean them.
Can you use household disinfecting wipes on kids' hands?
No, unless the product is specifically labeled for use on skin.
Household disinfecting wipes are generally designed for hard, nonporous surfaces rather than skin.
Use a product specifically intended for hands and follow its label directions.

The right format depends on where your child will use the wipes.
